Many nurse dreams and never birth them. This is not true for first time novelist Sevyn McCray.
I actually personally know Sevyn from high school. When I got ready to write this story I was trying to recall how I met her, I must admit that I don’t remember how we actually met, but I’m pretty sure it had nothing to do with writing.
A few months ago, I saw a post from her on Facebook inviting me to purchase her first novel “What Da Lick Read: The Triple Cross,” I instantly reached for my credit card and purchased the book (which was a price conscious $2.99), because she was an old high school friend. Upon downloading and getting into the story, I realized that Sevyn is not just a friend, but she is also a talented storyteller with an ability to draw the reader into the lives of the characters, causing you to care about them, which is a skill that all writers wish to develop.
The book could be categorized as “street lit” which is a genre that has risen in popularity in the recent years. These stories weave tales of social issues that blight our communities (drug dealing, prostitution, murder etc.) within plot lines that oftentimes deal with love stories, tragedy or coming of age.
Sevyn’s book tells the story of a family of drug dealers set on the West side of Atlanta, the area that both of us lived and went to high school in. From the first page until the last you are immersed into Atlanta’s drug dealing lifestyle, strip clubs, sibling rivalry and flossing- the ATL’s middle name! It seems almost movie like in the pace of the storytelling.
I guarantee you once you begin reading, it will be hard for you to put it down.
I have got to thank Sevyn for allowing my readers to download her book for FREE. Download your book and leave us comment on what you thought of it.
